  • 2 Cups milk
  • 5 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp. salt
  • 5 Tbsp. lard
  • 2 Cups lukewarm water
  • 2 Packages yeast
  • 12-14 Cups flour


  • Scald milk and add lard, sugar, and salt.
  • Cool till lukewarm.
  • Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water and add to lukewarm milk mixture.
  • Beat in 6 cups flour until smooth.
  • Gradually add remainder (6-7 cups) until dough forms a ball and is stiff enough to be kneaded.
  • Turn out on floured board and knead quickly and lightly until smooth and elastic.
  • Place in greased bowl, brush with melted lard or butter, cover and let rise until doubled, in a warm place (will take 45 minutes to 1 hour).
  • Divide dough into four equal portions and shape into loaves.
  • Place in greased bread pans, cover and let rise until double in bulk, about an hour.
  • Bake at 400° for about 50 minutes.
  • Remove from pans and butter tops and sides.
