  • 1 1/2 Cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 Cups water
  • 1/4 Tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 Tsp. nutmeg
  • 3 Tbsp. butter
  • 6 med. cooking apples (any good )
  • 2 Cups flour
  • 2 Tsp. baking powder
  • 1 Tsp. salt
  • 2/3 Cup shortening
  • 1/2 Cup milk

  • Combine sugar, water, spices.
  • Bring to a boil; add butter.
  • Sift together dry ingredients and cut in shortening.
  • Add milk all at once and stir until flour is just moistened.
  • Roll 1/8-inch thick on a floured surface.
  • Cut with a knife into squares.
  • Place the apple halves together after putting a pinch of butter, sugar, nutmeg, and cinnamon where the core was.
  • Then wrap the dough firmly around apple. (I use both hands lo press it around.)
  • Place apples about 1-inch apart in a baking dish.
  • Prick the top with sunburst pattern, and pour the syrup over the apples.
  • Have the oven hot before you put them in because the syrup causes them to soften up too much and come apart.
  • Heat oven to 375° about 35 minutes.
